December has this beautiful way of sweeping us into its busyness – the shopping lists, school concerts, holiday parties, and family traditions we try so hard to honor. It’s a joyful kind of busy…but it’s still busy. And in all that movement, our bodies faithfully carry us through, even when we’re running on fumes.
Just like Christmas lights glow brightest when they’re plugged in, you shine brightest when you pause long enough to recharge. That’s what this month’s wellness tip is all about: giving yourself permission to experience a little wonder, rest, and presence in the middle of the red, green, and sparkly chaos.
As a family physician caring for women and families here in the Capital Region of New York, I’m always encouraging patients to build in small, sustainable habits that support their mental health, immune system, and winter wellness. So this month, I’m inviting you to choose one tiny moment of self-care each day. Just one intentional pause – a thoughtful moment where your body gets a breath, your mind gets a soft landing, and your nervous system gets the important but often forgotten message: you are allowed to rest.
A small moment for yourself, not a full wellness routine, not a strict new habit, and definitely not another item on your already full checklist.
Here are a few easy healthy holiday microhabits to get you started:
Every time you see Christmas lights (on a house, a tree, even while trying to avoid eye contact with all the things at Target!), pause for one slow inhale and one slow exhale. This tiny sparkle-reset for your mind and body is great for supporting your nervous system and stress level during this busy time of year.
Drink a full glass of water first thing in the morning. Hydration helps improve winter fatigue, supports immunity, and wakes up your metabolism for the day.
Climb into bed 10 minutes earlier than usual. Those few extra minutes can support hormone balance, reduce inflammation, and improve mood, especially important for winter mental health and those prone to seasonal affective disorder.
A two-minute morning stretch to warm up your muscles for the day ahead and to decrease winter stiffness. Think neck rolls, shoulder circles, and a gentle spine twist – all done before your feet hit the floor.
Pair a snack or meal with a light walk (even if it’s just around the house) to support digestion, blood sugar, and afternoon energy.
Send a quick message to someone you care about – gratitude, a memory, or a simple “thinking of you.” Never underestimate the power of social connection.
Delegate, delete, or delay one thing. Intentional simplicity reduces stress, helps prevent holiday burnout, and gives others a chance to shine.
Warm up your feet with cozy socks before bed, an evidence-based trick that can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.
Choose your own small, steady choices to keep your body resilient and healthy through the season of cold air, celebrations, and stress. These simple winter wellness habits can make a meaningful difference in your energy, your mood, and your ability to show up for the people you love.
Your health is the real holiday gift that keeps on giving – show up for it, even during the busiest weeks of the season.
Another great way to show up for your health? Partnering with a primary doctor who has the time and bandwidth to care for you the way you deserve. If you live in the Albany or Capital Region of New York area, come meet me at Heirloom. You can book a free virtual Meet & Greet to get started – Dr. Meghan Monthie is accepting new patients, and I’d be honored to be part of your family’s story.
