As a family physician in the Albany, New York area, I lean on a simple but powerful truth: prevention is better than treatment.
As we move into flu season, I want to highlight about why the flu vaccine is so important, especially for busy women like you: CEOs of your households, caregivers to kids, aging parents, spouses, and often yourself (though you might be last on the list).
The influenza virus can lead to severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, particularly in young children, older adults, and those with chronic conditions (like asthma or diabetes). Many people underestimate how quickly getting the flu can escalate. The flu vaccine doesn’t just reduce your risk of getting sick. It also reduces how severe your illness might be if you do catch the flu.
By getting a flu shot, you reduce the chances of passing flu on to your spouse, children, elderly parents, or anyone else in your network. You’re not only protecting yourself: you’re protecting your family and your community. That’s especially meaningful if you live with or regularly see people at higher risk.
Flu season isn’t a fixed date; it’s a window. The vaccine takes about two weeks to provide full protection. The earlier you’re vaccinated (ideally by October), the better the coverage you’ll have during peak season which often hits in the winter months. Waiting until the flu is already circulating widely puts you at higher risk.
The flu vaccines used in the U.S. are rigorously tested each year for safety and effectiveness. Side effects are typically mild (soreness at the injection site, maybe a low-grade fever, fatigue). Meanwhile, the benefits (fewer sick days, fewer complications, reduced spread) far outweigh those mild risks.
Sometimes there are enhanced or higher-dose vaccine options for certain groups (older adults, for instance). Talk with your provider to see what’s best for you.
